1st Annual Skate Contest 2022

1st Annual Skate Contest 2022

A Day to Remember!

Yesterday, July 2, 2022, Weiden, a charming Bavarian town, solidified its status as a skateboarding hotspot with an unforgettable competition that set the local scene ablaze. Skitch Skate Shop (Grafenwöhr) and JUZ Weiden, with the tireless dedication of organizers Christopher Leach, Florian Graf, Christof Meier, Michael Ringer, and Christian Neidhardt, hosted the 1st Annual Skate Contest at Weiden’s newly opened skatepark. Skaters from across Germany—Nuremberg, Regensburg, Cologne, and beyond—converged to display their skills, passion, and love for the sport, competing for over €2,000 in cash and prizes. The day was a spectacular celebration of skateboarding and community that left everyone buzzing with excitement.

The competition took place at Weiden’s state-of-the-art skatepark, where diverse obstacles and a creative layout pushed skaters to their limits. The event was divided into three distinct groups, each showcasing different ages and skill levels. Group C (17 years and younger) started the day, with sign-ups closing at 10:30 AM, a warm-up at 10:35 AM, and runs beginning at 11:00 AM. The prizes for Group C inspired the next generation, with 1st place winning two skateboards, two T-shirts, wheels, and wax; 2nd place earning one skateboard, two T-shirts, and wax; 3rd place receiving one set of trucks, two T-shirts, and wax; 4th place taking home one set of wheels, two T-shirts, and wax; and 5th place awarded one set of bearings, one T-shirt, and wax.

Group B (18 years and older) followed, bringing seasoned riders to the stage, with sign-ups ending at 12:00 PM, a warm-up at 12:05 PM, and runs starting at 12:30 PM. Their prizes blended prestige and utility, with 1st place securing a trophy and a €200 Skitch Voucher, 2nd place earning a trophy and a €150 Skitch Voucher, 3rd place receiving a trophy and a €100 Skitch Voucher, 4th place getting a €50 Skitch Voucher, and 5th place awarded a €25 Skitch Voucher. Finally, Group A (Open Registration & Sponsored) welcomed skaters of all backgrounds, with sign-ups closing at 1:45 PM, a warm-up at 2:00 PM, and runs beginning at 2:15 PM. This group competed for significant cash prizes, with 1st place winning €500, 2nd place taking €300, 3rd place earning €200, 4th place receiving €100, and 5th place getting €50.

The Best Trick session was a highlight, with skaters delivering jaw-dropping flips, grinds, and slides that had the crowd roaring. The energy was electric, and those who landed the most impressive tricks walked away with cash rewards and bragging rights. Beyond the competition, the event fostered a sense of community. Live music echoed through the park, food trucks served up delicious bites, and the supportive atmosphere captured the heart of skateboarding culture. Whether competing or cheering, everyone felt the camaraderie that defines the sport.

The success of yesterday’s event underscores the explosive growth of Weiden’s skate scene, fueled by the commitment of Skitch Skate Shop, JUZ Weiden, and local skaters. The new skatepark proved itself a hub for creativity and skill development, cementing Weiden’s place on Germany’s skateboarding map. As skateboarding continues to thrive, this competition has ignited passion in the next generation and set the stage for an even brighter future.

We’re thrilled to share a video recap of the event, crafted by talented videographers who generously volunteered their time. Watch it to relive the hype and feel the energy!
